How to fill out the Sample Submission Form
- The first step is to download the form.
- You can fill in most of the fields on the form before you print it out, but you'll need to paste in a copy of your sample by hand. You can
also print out the form and then fill it out.
- Be sure to include your name and contact information, especially your code for the sample, how your reference in your lab book, and
the page in your lab book where the sample appears. This will keep us all from getting different samples mixed up.
- Add the complete chemical formula of the compound. Do not use abbreviations like Me or EtOH in the formula. Submission forms missing
chemical formulas will not be accepted.
- Note whether the compound decomposes in air, if it is hazardous or toxic, if it is prone to losing solvent or if it requires any other
special handling procedures. If you answer "yes" to any of those items, please provide a written explanation.
- Indicate which, if any, analyses you have performed on the material you are giving me. Feel free to explain any interesting results you
found.
- Include a sketch of what you believe the structure to be. Please don't assume I know the various acronyms you use, especially if this is
the first sample of its type you submit.
- If you have x-ray data on similar compounds, please indicate those compounds on the form. If you have the unit cell, publication reference
or the x-ray lab code (if I solved the structure), please provide that as well.
- Include the solvents used in preparation of your crystals.
- In the section entitled "Data Collection" you will most often want to check "Refine". If you only want a Unit Cell to see if the material is
the same as something else you've collected, check that box. If you want me to collect the data and process it, but not to solve or refine the
structure, check "Collect." This should be used if you want to solve your own structures. If you want a refinement including a picture of the structure
and a simple set of data tables, check "Refine." If you want a full report, with experimental write-up, full structural anaylsis, and lots of pictures,
check "Report". (Please note, the full report costs more.)
- Bring the form to the x-ray lab or to my office when you are done. I will not start a data collection without a completed form.
